Surfing Lesson 4 - Lets Have some Fun and Catch that First Wave by Rodney Lister
Alright then lets get down to business, only 2 articles to go. You now know the right surfboard for a beginner, how to paddle it, and get out through the surf, so in this article we are going to cover the fun part, catching the wave.
Catching your first wave :
Now that you have made it out the back, straddle your surfboard so your bum is just below the center. This makes it easiest to swing the board around when a set comes.
Keep your eyes on the horizon so the swells don't take you by surprise, but also keep on checking the shore to make sure you are not drifting down to far. Choose an easy to see land mark on the shore, and stay out the front of it.
Now you have to choose a good wave, so pick one that looks full enough to pick you up, but isn't just about to break or dump you. You will learn this with experience, so turn your board around, lay down with your body positioned correctly and paddle according to the article on paddling.
Getting your position right takes a bit of practice, so remember that if you are lying too far back, it creates resistance in the water, slowing you down. This in turn will cause you to drop off the back of the wave.
Where as if you are to far forward on the board, you will end up flipping over or tumbling down the face of the wave. You need to stay forward enough to get the speed, but keep your chest up and lean back as you drop. Ultimately you would pop to your feet, just as begin to feel the board take, but when learning you want to wait until you have dropped down to the flat water in front of the wave.
You have to paddle as hard as you can to get that speed, and keep the board pointing straight towards the beach. For now you are looking to stand up at the bottom of the wave so heading straight is the go, when you get a bit more experience you can angle the board to go along the wave.
